Christ Church Cranbrook Carillon Records

Abstract Installed in 1927, the original Christ Church carillon was a gift from local resident Harold L. Wallace and his family. Wallace worked closely with the foundry and the architect of the church, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue Associates, in determining the physical space requirements and the number of octaves and bells to be employed. Samuel Simpson Marquis with his ideas for building an Episcopal church and school on the Cranbrook estate to serve the needs of the growing Bloomfield Hills community. Bruce Coulter joined the faculty of Cranbrook School as an English master in 1936, serving as faculty member, coach, and administrator. The bulk of this collection consists of materials concerning "Forty Years On", Bruce Coulter's history of the first forty years of Cranbrook School, and the typescript for "The Facts of the Case," a story written in 1962; a Cranbrook School baseball team scorebook, 1940-1942; and two scrapbooks.

Gerhardt Knodel directed the Cranbrook Academy of Art from 1996-2007. Before that, Knodel served as the Fiber department's artist-in-residence since 1970. This collection preserves meeting documents, correspondence, notes and other records from his tenure as Director, related to the Academy of the Art, from day-to-day and year-to-year operations as well as projects, including exhibits, events, and the design and construction of the New Studios Building.
